A new Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on “Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for Regulation – SUSTAIN-AI-REG”

Updated: Jan 1

The European Commission has selected the LUMSA project for a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on ‘Sustainable Artificial Intelligence for Regulation – SUSTAIN-AI-REG’, directed by Prof. Nicoletta Rangone. LUMSA is thus among the 47 Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence funded worldwide. This recognition confirms the University's strategic role in research, training and third mission on the topics of artificial intelligence and sustainability in the public sector.

Over the next three years, the Centre will develop research and training activities dedicated to understanding how AI can support regulatory and inspection control authorities, while assessing its environmental impact and risks to the rule of law. Initiatives will include the development of methodologies to measure the environmental impact of AI technologies and the definition of sustainability criteria for their development and use by public administrations.

The Centre is characterised by a strong interdisciplinary approach, involving experts in law, economics, data science, statistics and environmental studies. The research group includes, among others, LUMSA professors M. Naldi, G. Ferri, M. Rizzolli and A. Maruotti. The project is also part of the activities of the Leopoldo Elia Research Centre (CREL) at LUMSA University.

The Centre's international dimension is ensured by its collaboration with prestigious partners, including: University of London-Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, The Good Lobby, HEC Paris, University of Barcelona, as well as representatives of the OECD-Regulatory Delivery Programme and the European Public Law Organisation-IRIDE. The project also involves international experts from leading universities and institutions, such as the London School of Economics, the University of Pennsylvania, the European University Institute and University College London.

Planned activities include two international conferences on “Innovation for Regulation” and “Sustainability in Innovation”, annual “Contests” on good practices in sustainable innovation in regulation, university and professional courses, internships, scientific publications, podcast episodes, newsletters and a “Transparency Register on AI in the Regulatory Cycle” that is fully accessible to the public.
